Description
About The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth
The Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle-earth is a two-player strategy game in which one player leads the Fellowship of the Ring and the other commands Sauron. It is played across three chapters that follow the original book trilogy.
It was designed by Antoine Bauza and Bruno Cathala, illustrated by Vincent Dutrait and published by Repos Production. It builds on the ideas of their game 7 Wonders Duel.
How the game works
You take turns choosing chapter cards to build your strength, and some cards add units to a central map of Middle-earth. Completing fortresses gives you a permanent presence on the matching map space.
There are three ways to win: advance far enough on the Quest of the Ring (destroying the One Ring or capturing Frodo and Sam), hold every region of the map, or rally six different races.
The two sides play differently, so it is worth playing both.
Why it works at a family table
It is a good choice for couples or two friends, with a game taking around 30 to 45 minutes.
If you know 7 Wonders Duel you will recognise the way the cards work, and the Tolkien theme, map and fortresses add something new.
Several Lord of the Rings board games exist, including The Confrontation by Reiner Knizia and a cooperative game for two to five players. Check the listing says Duel for Middle-earth if you want this two-player game.
