Description
About Pictionary
Pictionary is a drawing game in which one player sketches a word from a card while their teammates race to guess it before the timer runs out. It is charades with a pencil, so the artist cannot speak or use letters and numbers.
It was invented by Robert Angel, with graphic design by Gary Everson, and first published in 1985 by Angel Games. Hasbro bought the rights in 1994, and it is now published by Mattel.
How a turn works
Players split into teams, and each team takes turns to choose a Picturist, who secretly looks at a word on a card and then sketches clues while the rest of the team guess.
A timer limits how long the Picturist has, so quick, simple sketches work best. If the team guesses the word in time, it moves forward on the board and has another go, and if not, play passes to the other team.
The first team to reach the finish of the board and guess a final sketch correctly wins.
Why it works at a family table
Nobody needs to be able to draw, and the worst sketches often make the best moments. The rules take a minute to explain, so it suits mixed ages and abilities.
It is played in teams, so it works well for a family get-together, and the more people on each team, the livelier it gets.
This listing is Mattel’s 40 Years of Fun edition, which has three levels of clue cards and is played in two teams. Pictionary comes in other versions with different cards and rules, so check the listing matches.
